Biography

Dr. Lewe is a certified energy management professional (EMP) and a subject matter expert in physics-based modeling, data engineering / science for district energy systems and smart energy solutions as well as transportation engineering. He holds the principal leadership position for the Energy Infrastructure and Data Engineering group, which partners with GT Infrastructure and Sustainability (I&S) and the Strategic Energy Institute (SEI). He is also the lead of the SEI Energy Flexbility and Data Initiative. His research applies to systems at multiple levels, including grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEB) and equipment, distributed energy resources (DER), district energy systems (central plants and their networks) and the wider electric grid. Campus-centric techniques develped by his research group can be applied to other campus-sized communities, urban areas, metropolitan regions and beyond. As the Co-PI of the Georgia Energy Shed Project, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, he is in charge of developing and analyzing methods for the distribution of electricity and energy usage of the metropolitan Atlanta while incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) metrics. Additionally, Dr. Lewe is interested in transportation system-of-systems and is focusing on multi-paradigm modeling and simulation approaches using agent-based modeling and/or system dynamics, which enables the analysis of system impact assessment due to socioeconomics, new technologies and transportation modes. He has published a substantial amount of research related to various fields. Specifically, he has has authored 60+ journal/magazine articles, conference papers, and technical reports in the areas of energy, space propulsion, on-demand aviation system design, transportation network, data science, and multi-criteria optimization.
