Ethan Maretich
Ethan is a Director in the Global Trade Organization at Microsoft, and is based in Washington, DC. He leads a global team with primary responsibilities in export controls and sanctions for Microsoft’s product and service offerings. He has industry expertise in US and foreign export jurisdiction and classification determination, export licensing, encryption controls and compliance, de minimis analysis, deemed exports compliance, compliance systems architecture / integration, risk management, and government monitor advisory services. Ethan has over 16 years’ experience in trade compliance and engineering.
Ethan started his career as a senior engineer at Eaton Corporation, designing fluid conveyance systems and components for commercial aircraft programs. In his engineering tenure with Eaton, he earned a Six Sigma Black Belt and has three patents to his name. About 5 years into his career, the U.S. State and Commerce Departments published sweeping export regulation reforms, and he was tapped to lead a team of engineering managers to re-classify all products at the company across updated munitions control lists. Since that time, he’s forged a new career path in the world of international trade compliance, but has continued to leverage his engineering and technical background throughout. After serving his last role with Eaton as a Global Product Compliance Manager, Ethan had stints in consulting with Avant International and FTI Consulting on trade compliance program matters, managing and supporting clients’ needs to implement effective trade controls, classify large-scale product portfolios, and advise on violation/disclosure matters in the face of U.S. government-imposed monitorships.
Ethan has served as a guest speaker at conferences/seminars in the trade community, speaking on topics ranging from export compliance, technology controls and intangible transfers, and has held multiple leadership roles in the Society for International Affairs. He was a Student Ambassador, President of the Ramblin’ Reck Club, and part of the group responsible for bringing back the traditions book, the T-Book. He has previously served on the Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Council, and is currently a mentor in Georgia Tech’s GTDC: Pathways to Policy program. He also serves on the board of DC Eleven (“DCXI”) Football Club, an elite youth soccer academy in Washington, DC.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and later earned an MBA from the University of Colorado. He and his wife, Laura (a lawyer, Public Policy graduate, and former standout GT Volleyball athlete), live in Washington, DC and have two boys, Jacob and Christopher, and an Old English Sheepdog, Dot. In his free time, he enjoys traveling/adventuring with his family, playing golf, watching soccer (proper football), and working on home remodeling/renovation projects.
