Email and AE Computer Accounts
All faculty and staff are automatically assigned AE email addresses (i.e, of the form: george.burdell@aerospace.gatech.edu) and AE domain accounts as a part of normal employment orientation. The email address is associated with the AE email domain, and it is simply an alias that points to an email account. Normally, this email account is the OIT PRISM account that all employees receive automatically. This account is set up by by OIT and managed by the user through the GT passport facility at http://passport.gatech.edu. This account is used to access most campus IT resources including email, the course management system (TSquare), the Registrar's systems, and the Institute buisness systems.
Each faculty and staff member is assigned a separate account in the AE domain. This account is administered from the main AE server and it will be validated on any WinXP/Vista systems that are members of the AE domain. This account should be used to access AE data and services on the departmental servers. In addition, a "home"directory is provided for each account and can be used to save files (a quota is applied). Other public and semi-public directories can be used to exchange files that might otherwise be too large to send as attachments. This account can also be accessed from non-Windows OS systems using the SMB file sharing protocol (generally referred to as "samba").
GRA's may also have AE Domain Accounts but they must be associated with a faculty advisor who will be responsible for any costs incurred. This is not a normal option but is provided for unusual cases.
Please see Bill Meyer about AE Domain accounts or to have your PRISM password reset, and see Ralph Latham about email alias setup issues.
