"Turbine Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer, Materials and Mechanics," a book co-authored by AE's William R. T. Oakes Chair Vigor Yang, has been selected as the July 2018 Book of the Month by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Announcement of the honor came as hundreds of experts in the field joined Yang in Cincinnati for the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum, which will run until July 11.

Originally published in 2014, the book is the product of a collaboration between Yang and his longtime colleague, Prof. Thomas Shih, the J. William Uhrig and Anastasia Vournas Head of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University.

Asked to comment on the honor, Yang deflected praise, preferring, instead to compliment his co-author and his team of GT-AE graduate students.

"It is a good year for my research group. We've so far in 2018 published three papers in Physics of Fluids," he said. "I am fortunate to work with such talented researchers."

Turbine Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer, Materials, and Mechanics, provides an introduction to turbines in the context of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials, and mechanics. Divided into four parts, it addresses:

  • Major considerations in the design of turbines, from aerodynamics to turbine cooling, seals, and clearance control for efficiency and performance
  • Details of turbine cooling, including uncertainty issues that must be addressed in experimental and computational studies
  • Super alloys, thermal barrier coatings, and mechanisms by which materials can fail due to thermal and mechanical loads, as well as the nondestructive evaluation of the turbine component
  • Challenges that arise from burning alternative fuels and operating in dusty environments
