AIAA offers a series of design competitions every year. For a summary of past AIAA competition placements.
AIAA Design, Build, Fly
The Design, Build, Fly (DBF) is held under tha auspices of the AIAA Foundation. Since 1998, the Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL), a graduate program within the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, has supported contest entries to design and build small, unmanned aircraft. Since that time, over 40 new aircraft have been built and flown from the shop facilities located on campus.
The design competition program, available as free elective credit under the AE *355 Design Competition series of classes, offers students the opportunity to be part of a complete design iteration. Students participate in every phase of the vehicle’s evolution from rules screening and conceptual design, through vehicle sizing, detail design, prototyping, and flight testing. The program has become not just an exercise aerospace of disciplines, but rather a highly multi-disciplinary design problem requiring the balance of many conflicting requirements. These requirements include not only academic studies, but also finding sponsors, personnel management, resource allocation, and progress reporting.
