Assignment of Your Advisor:
Each AE undergraduate student is assigned a faculty advisor who will assist you with planning and carrying out your program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. Your AE Advisor will also be available to help you with any other problems you may encounter at Georgia Tech. You are also encouraged to talk to other AE faculty and staff, and especially to the instructors in your AE classes, to learn as much as you can about your academic studies and the exciting and challenging career you are beginning in aerospace engineering.
Normally, you will be informed of the name of your advisor shortly after you arrive on the campus for the first time. If you do not know your Advisor's name, you can contact the AE Academic Office by phone (x4-3001), in person, or by email.
Advisement Procedure for Each Semester:
Several weeks before pre-registration each semester, you should receive a notice informing you that you must meet with your AE Advisor to update your program of study and go over your plans for the next term. Generally, the first 3 days of the week preceding the start of pre-registration is designated for pre-registration advising, but your AE Advisor may contact you separately to let you know when he/she will be available. Some AE Advisors are using a new web-based AE Advising Appointment Scheduler that will allow you to make individual appointments for advising during this period of time. If so, they should let you know about this, and hopefully, it will minimize the time you might spend waiting outside an office. Before meeting with your AE Advisor, you should stop by the AE Academic Office and pick up your "plastic folder" which contains a record of your advisement process and related items. You should also pick up two blank copies of the Course Schedule form on which you will list the courses you plan to take in the next semester.
When you meet with your AE Advisor, you will probably want to review your previous term and to discuss how things are going for the current term. You should discuss the courses you are planning to take for the next semester (normally you will have listed them on the Course Schedule form). Your AE Advisor will let you know about any changes in the current AE program of study and how these may or may not affect your program of study. Your Advisor will also help you try to resolve any class time conflicts or issues associated with course availability. Please feel free to ask any questions so that you will fully understand how your program of study is structured. When finished, your Advisor will sign one of the Course Schedule forms and place it in your Plastic Folder. You should then return the Plastic Folder to the AE Academic Office.
Pre-registration Holds:
AE will routinely place a "hold" on your pre-registration until you have met with your AE Advisor. This is usually confirmed when you return your Plastic Folder to the AE Academic Office with a copy of the Course Schedule signed by your Advisor. The AE Academic Office will then remove the "hold" on your pre-registration so that you will be able to pre-register as soon as your assigned time permits.
If for any reason you are not able to meet with your AE Advisor during the generally designated period in the week before pre-registration each semester (or during the times separately designated for this purpose by your Advisor), the "hold" will remain on your pre-registration and you will not be able to pre-register. Please contact your AE Advisor directly to schedule a meeting and then have the "hold" removed.
NOTE:
AE also places a drop hold on all student schedules at the end of the first week of the semester. As a result, you will not be able to drop a course on the web until this hold is removed. You must consult with your AE Advisor before dropping any course, and your Advisor will make any further suggestions and authorize the AE Academic Office to remove the hold. For many Advisors, this can be handled by email, but others may require an office visit. Remember to ask first and don't wait until the last moment!
